Sigiriya

 SIGIRIYA

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is a significant archaeological site located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka.

This ancient rock fortress dates back to the 5th century AD and is attributed to King Kashyapa. Rising about 200 meters (660 feet) above the surrounding plains, the site features a complex of gardens, reservoirs, and various other structures. The entrance to the fortress is marked by a giant pair of lion's paws, giving the rock its name.

Sigiriya is renowned for its frescoes, which depict celestial maidens and are considered masterpieces of ancient Sri Lankan art.

The site's advanced hydraulic systems, including canals, fountains, and ponds, demonstrate sophisticated engineering skills. Sigiriya also served as a royal palace and a Buddhist monastery. .....

The Mirror Wall, once polished to reflect like glass, still bears ancient graffiti from visitors over the centuries. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya is a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of ancient Sri Lankan civilization. Today, it remains a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of the country's rich cultural heritage.❤️
